There are two mixed-age learning centers at Amherst Christian Academy that use Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) materials. The Lower Center includes grades two through six. The Upper Center includes grades seven through twelve. The Centers have approximately ten to twenty students each. Each center has a certified teacher and may include a part-time aid. On average the student to teacher ratio is eight to one.
The core curriculum in grades two though twelve includes the following six basic academic disciplines:
Literature and Creative Writing
Word Building (Spelling)
Each student's academic program is tailored to their individual needs. We begin with a placement test to determine their ability level and then progress from there. Students who are more skilled may progress at a faster rate or may accelerate in the areas of their academic strengths. Other students are encouraged to do their best, but are able to work on their levels of proficiency and proceed as they are capable.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Programs
Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten program is based on the Montessori model of instructing a mixed-age group of students. Students learn in an intimate setting where they choose from an assortment of learning activities throughout the day. The teacher facilitates their learning by designing the activities and then implementing them with the students. Student ages range from three years old to five years old. Pre-Kindergarten students learn to identify their letters and numbers up to twenty by the end of the year. Kindergarten students learn to read independently and add before the end of the school year as a result of this program.
